Yahoo set to align with Microsoft to take on Google
Carol Bartz, Yahoo’s CEO for about six months now, has reportedly said that provided price is right and Yahoo gets access over surfers’ profile, Yahoo would be interested in aligning with Microsoft to take on Google. According to com Score, Google has virtual monopoly over search advertising with close to 65% market share. Yahoo ranks distant second with close to 20% market share. Microsoft with 8% is at dismal third place.
In case Yahoo aligns with Microsoft, the total market share which the combo will hold, will be 28%, probably slightly better than their positions in isolation. But that would not help either of the two unless, Yahoo and Microsoft take up cudgels and come out with some innovating thing which can make inroads in to the Google’s market share. Google virtually holds sway over millions and trillions of web pages.
Microsoft through Bing has tried to cut in to either of Google and Yahoo’s share but the steady rise in Bing’s market share has probably been arrested. Search advertising domain will always favour the older players who have control over users’ preferences and their profiles. Actually its a vicious circle. More control over users’ preferences, breeds more and more visitors. Even if Yahoo and Microsoft join hand and come out with a search domain which is as good as Google, the results will still take years to come. But surely a start in the right direction would have been made.
Yahoo’s share in US markets has been gaining ground over the impending alignment but it’s still way behind, USD 31.0, which Microsoft earlier offered to Yahoo for compete taking over of its operations.
