Twitter Hashtags guide.

A hashtag is basically the Twitter equivalent of metadata on a message. If you want your website or blog to be easily found in the search engines, you would add metadata in the website headers which will then be picked up by the Google spiders when they visit. Well, a hashtag is basically the Twitter equivalent. By appending hashtags to your tweets you help Twitter to easily link them.

To further elaborate lets talk about Copenhagan summit. A hashtag like #Copenhagan can be put in tweets and after that it becomes easy to find them within the twitter. There can be many tweets on Copenhagan but further if you want to link it to news on BASIC block, just add #basic and you will have information and tweets on both #copenhagan and #basic filtered and made available for your reading.

How to use twitter hashtags

Let’s say you want to find a hashtag to use that is Internet-related. Just go to the Categories section and click on Internet. Each category has several tags to choose from. The Internet category for example has tags for #facebook, #twitter, and #socialmedia. Not sure which category your hashtag is in? You can search keywords within Twubs as well.

In case you don’t find hashtags in the popular places on the web just visit the Twubs and resgister you hashtag. You can then begin building the whole world around your hashtag.

Marketing With Hashtags

Hashtags can be used for all sorts of marketing reasons: news (#h1n1, #cop), political campaigns (#uselections), events, barcamps, meetups and functions just to name a few. Companies do rely on hashtags to generate buzz about their products and services.

Next time you are working on a new project concerning global warming just use the hashtag #globalwarming to know whats the latest on global warming.
