Radiation Scare in Delhi.
Recent incident once again highlights system’s failure in addressing the safety issues. Hazardous wastes demand a safe way of disposal in line with extent of their severity. There are specific guidelines on how these wastes are to be disposed off. Cobalt-60 is used in radiotherapy of cancer patients and demand a well specified and laid out procedure for its safe disposal.
But the way this radioactive material has been able to reach the backyards of Mayapuri’s scrap market is an eye opener for all us. Mind it radiotherapy is conducted in only in established and reputed hospitals, be it privately managed. And all these hospitals have a well laid our procedure to dispose off these material which can cause severe damage to our immune system.
OHSAS 18001, Occupational Health Safety Assessment Series 18001 stipulates establishment of a sound Health and Safety management system in every organization who chooses to get certified under this system. There are many organizations who have volunteered for this management system as a part of CSR but in actual implementation there are wide gaps. The implementation exists only on paper. In practice, SHE management system is hardly followed. There are obviously some exceptions and some law abiding and socially conscious organizations are following this SHE management system but society wants more to be done on this issue.
