Many of us spends close to ten hours everyday on computers. While we are all aware of basics like keeping good posture, placing laptops on hard surface, 20-20-20 rule of computing, using anti glare screens, good earthing, proper ventilation for all computer peripherals etc but still getting reminded through updates goes a long way in ensuring safety and our well being.

Computers have become necessity for all professionals. Young students and professionals are born with computers on their sides but our older generation is still figuring out fast changing design, hardware and software of computing machines. A computer is a safe device provided some basics are followed.

  1. Proper ventilation: All CPUs have a fan which helps in keeping CPU cool. In addition main processor also has a fan which cools the processing chip. But fans will only be of help provided proper ventilation is ensured. If you are not providing enough gap behind the CPU and placing laptops on your laps and bed, you are in fact blocking the air circulation. As the temperature inside the CPU goes up, there is a chance that processor may conk off. So ensure for desktops that proper distance from the wall is maintained and laptops are placed on the hard top only.
  2. Don’t try to open up your computer: You know you are not a hardware guy. You know software but just to satisfy your itch you start opening up your CPU and mess up the whole thing. Avoid that little feeling or inquisitiveness.  Computer circuitry is quite complex and fooling around with it may land you in problem.
  3. Don’t keep magnetic objects near CRT monitors:  Magnetic objects tend to magnetize the CRT monitors and you have colorful ribbons forming on the screens. In case you are using LCD monitors then clean them with special cloths provided for the purpose. Don’t use sharp objects near the LCD monitors.
  4. Proper Earthing: Your CPU and all peripherals should be properly earthed or else there is strong chance that your Disk drives can get damaged. Improperly earthed terminal can also results in electrical shock.
  5. Safe disposal: All electronic goods are required to be disposed of safely. These are all environmental hazards and needs to be disposed in keeping with environmental policies of the organizations.
