Is Programming as a Career losing Sheen?

Programming was a sunrise career not long ago. The guys were doing some hardcore coding to add value to their clients mainstream work. The results were there for all to see. Relational data base were used to back ends and PHP/.Net/Java etc were used to be the front end coding languages. This was not long ago. Programming is still a good profession albeit not a paying one any more. Too much competition and cheap labor has made IT lose its sheen and it is today like any other profession. I have been closely watching computer science, coding and programming for quite sometime now. And I had this feeling in my mind till I saw these two posts. One post at Slashdot with backup from ITWORLD has  just come out with statistics for and against programming as the dream career of coming decade. It quotes.

Computer Science BS graduates can expect an annORLDl salary from $54,000-$74,000. Starting salaries for MS and PhD graduates can be to up to $100,000.

and …

Employment of computer scientists is expected to grow by 24 percent from 2010 to 2018 …

The US Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics was provided as a reference.

This made me sit up and take note of views and counter views presented in the posts. No doubt programming as a career has taken a hit during slowdown as companies resorted to cuts in their IT spending. But the coming decade augurs well for the IT and computer science professionals. A recent report from Ovum has suggested that IT spending in India is expected to grow by more than 23% in 2010. This growth would be led by mostly the Government spending. China is also expected to chip in with large IT projects. US and EU may not see exponential growth figures in IT of last decade. But still there would be takers for quality work anywhere.
