Client Linux desktop is steadily gaining ground.
Linux comparatively has better market share as the server operating system than a client operating system. Servers have been running Linux for quite sometime and it’s quite well accepted there. Windows OS no doubt provides everything, sometimes even more than what you would have bargained for but it’s dominance has stifled other rivals. Nearest rival Mac is far behind in client desktop market. The statistics published by Net Applications, reveals that Windows OS in the client desktop market commands 88% market share. Apple’s Mac, is far behind at 9.73% market share. Linux has just breached the 1% barrier. Linux over the years has evolved and has become much smoother and simple to handle and operate.
Fedora, openSUSE, and Ubuntu have made all computer users realize that anyone can run Linux now. Dell and HP have been offering pre-installed Linux for some of their variants. But the common perception amongst even the net savvy users over the years have been that running Linux involves knowledge of hardware and commands have to be typed for them to be executed. Linux distros over the years have been steadily gaining ground but still reaching the double digit share will require some tie-ups and promotion with hardware manufacturers. Windows OS once had 100% market share. The level has come down to sub 90% only recently. Jaunty, the Ubuntu 9.04 the recent upgrade works just like a Windows OS. And with OpenOfice around one can do almost everything what a PC user can do with Windows.
The coming times will see Mac and Linux giving tough competition to Windows in the client desktop market but Microsoft is not expected to sit idle and just watch its two rivals eating its share. But the competition in the space has just started hotting up.
