linux After India, now Hungarian Government gears up to embrace Open Source. technologyAfter one of the India’s major opposition party, came out with an IT vision document during run up to parliamentary polls, laying strong emphasis on open source software, now the Hungarian government has also pitched in for open source software. Government has announced its plans to float an open tender for open source software for educational institutions. Government has earmarked close to 55 million US Dollars for the program.
This amount is nearly the same which Hungarian government spends on Microsoft products. Government is also reviving “Software Competency Centre” to help educational institutions’ transition from proprietary software to open source software. As the Linux and other open source products evolve and mature, software world may see Microsoft losing their grip on the IT market.
All big IT giants are coming to this realization that in times to come unless they gear up to tackle open source software effectively they may have to lose their market share. Most of the corporate buyers world over have been sourcing their Operating Systems from Microsoft. And Microsoft’s market share in this segment has remain unchallenged for more than two decades now. Linux has matured over the years and today it offers close to everything which a Windows Vista or Windows 7 does. If not all, at least all basic requirements of an PC user can be met through Linux suite which today has in its stable, an operating system, OpenOffice from Sun Microsystems, which has all basic comparable features of Microsoft Office, Image editors, web browsers like Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome, mp3/mp4 and video players.
Fear of ensuing competition has dawned on all major IT players. But it’s sure that an organization can survive only if it has a revenue generating model. Open source does have many products which are technologically at par with that of Microsoft or Apple. But open source software loses out when it comes to providing updates and offerring service support.
