Last decade has witnessed proliferation of private professional colleges in all nook and corner of the  India. We all know how good some of these colleges are. Supreme Court’s adverse observation on proliferation of these institutions and dilution of standards should be viewed as eye opener for regulators.

These colleges have been churning out professional graduates year after year. But pass outs from most of these colleges have not been able to match the skills and knowledge of their counterparts in Government institutions.

There are well defined criteria which  these pvt colleges have to comply with before they get eligible for recognition by either University Grant Commission, Medical council of India or All India Council of Technical Education, the regulators.

Court said

Protagonists of privatization of education should realize what is happening in the country.

The observation by SC has put all these regulators under tight spot and they must resort to serious thinking to come out and clean and take remedial steps to set the wrongs right.  Yashpal Committee has observed that bodies like AICTE and UGC should be replaced by a super regulator. The observation is not out of place as the learning appears to have dawned on the academia and very soon we can find some shaking up taking place in top echelons. But the interests of all pass outs and the ones who are still studying in these private professional colleges will have to be protected.
