Living green is the latest fad to hit the headlines. Green brigade has many suggestions when it comes to lifestyle with least carbon footprints. But there are hardly any suggestions when the need arises to guide flat residents. In this post we are trying to cover a topic which has not been touched with seriousness so far. There are two ways to look at this issue. If you are an existing flat resident then there are very little you can do about the orientation. It all depends upon which part of world you are living. If you are blessed with ample sunlight coming in to your apartments then you can effectively use sunlight to your advantage even if you are staying in apartments.

Here are some tips which will make you save energy and cut down on your carbon footprint.

  • Use Two layers of curtains: A lighter shade facing the wall and a thick darker shade after that. Lighter shade will helpĀ  letting the natural sunlight in while the darker shade will help in maintaining the temperature inside. During the day lighter shade linen can be put up while during the night, the darker shade can even cover up.
  • Resort to Microwave cooking to save on time as well as energy.
  • Make your apartment completely insulated. Even fine crevices and openings in the windows and ventilators can result in excessive heat transfers.
  • Relocate freezers and fridges away from kitchen or areas which are likely to have high temperatures.
  • Prefer using split ACs over Window ACs. Window AC are more likely to leave out crevices and openings which can let outside air in and may increase the load on ACs.
  • Use Natural Air to dry your clothes over powered driers.
  • Set the room temperature thermostat a wee bit higher. This would save you electricity.
  • Change your tubelights to CFL wherever possible. In case it is not possible to completely avoid tubelights then change their ballasts to electric one. The ordinary ballasts darken the walls and consume electricity to produce unwanted heat.
