Arrest System Distribution Losses–Energy Auditing

Measurement of losses in distribution transformers is a tricky thing.  ECBC code which had arrived in 2007 and later lot improved in 2008 and 2009 indicates No Load and Load losses at various % loading for Oil and Dry Type transformers. But in addition to looking for and monitoring losses in transformers there are many other things which energy auditor should look for.

To optimize system distribution losses the most basic options which should be kept in mind are listed as below:

  • Locating and repositioning distribution transformers close to load centres to minimize losses.
  • Look for weak connections in distribution network like loose contacts, old brittle conductors and jumpers which results in appreciable losses.
  • Opting for lower resistance Aluminium Alloy Conductors in place of ACSR( Aluminium Cored Steel Reinforced lines.
  • PF improvement by employing capacitors near load centres.
  • Optimized loading of distribution transformers.
  • Look for those lines where losses and voltages drops are very high. Resort to re-routing and re-conductoring such feeders and lines.
