Should I take another shot at IIT JEE.
It has become a sort of annual ritual. Every year millions of students sit our for engineering entrance examinations, lucky few get selected others either just take recourse to the paid seats or just bide their time for another year. I knew few IITians who graduated some twenty years back. I held discussions with them over last weekend about career options and engineering professions in general. All of these graduates have been doing well in their chosen vocation. Some are over the moon while others are not that lucky but doing OK in their lives.
Some of these graduates, whom I had interacted could not get through in their first attempts. They waited for a year, some even two years and then they were selected. But that was around 20 years back. Today whole dynamics of career options have turned heads over heals. What was right some 20 years back may not be OK today. The whole group was in unison when this specific question was posed to them that “Would they still take a year off, had they been in present setup if they could not have got selected in to IITs”. The answer was big “NO”.
Having lived their life and achieved so much this group of ex IITians give full credit to their alma mater. But the answer to the question was still rattling me. If these guys are giving so much credit to their respective institutes then what’s wrong in taking a year off and then try their luck next time. God willing they may get through with decent rank.
While group gave the question thumbs down but their answers were different. One guy who graduated from IIT Kanpur in Mechanical Engg in 1989 said that IIT years gave me confidence and shaped my personality but in today’s times the young minds are so matured and confident of themselves that they don’t need an IIT degree to excel in their lives. For these guys who have some spark in them and but have missed the JEE bus, life doesn’t stop. It only takes a different route to success.
Another ex IITian, added “Today you can find many exciting professions. These were not there in our times. In addition, today you also have many other options available after you graduate.”
I was still confused. No doubt world has changed a lot but an IIT degree is still most sought after for a Math major student of class 12th. Having discussed with all my friends and my hubby, i came to the conclusion that if a student has not been able to make it in its first attempt and most importantly she or he feels that she or he can get through by studying hard then verdict is clear, he or she must take a year off and should give another shot at JEE.
But for others who are not so confident about their credentials and have scored less that 90% marks in 12th examinations, sitting out for a year, would not be right decision, if they have some other options with them.
