50 km by 50 km in Rajasthan – all you need to meet total power requirement.

Recession may ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise for Solar PV enthusiasts world over. Prices have solar PV modules have taken a huge hit. Reason primarily lies in tonnes of supplies from China and slowdown in demand for Solar PV products in EU markets. While environmentalists will be happy with the trend they would indeed welcome the prospect of a Solar PV based plant breaking even in 16 years as compared to 22 years. China has a lot many Solar PV manufacturers with huge installed capacities.

The slowdown in EU market has affected their operations and to keep these installed capacities utilized China has kick started and taken its solar PV program  to the next level. During last few months China has announced series of big solar power plants. These plants will definitely give huge boost to companies like Canadian Solar, Suntech Power etc.

India just needs an area of 50 km by 50 km in North West Rajasthan where the intensity of solar insolation is maximum in the country. And if we install solar pv plants in this area then whole country’s power demand can be met. With prices of solar cells coming down world over, planners may have to revisit their plans for next 25-30 years to bring in more focus on renewables.
