Newest Trends in Architecture – The Green.
Our present decade started with concerns over high rise buildings in the wake of Sept 11, 2001 episode. But that was only for few early years. March to pridely own the tallest building continued unabated. Taiwan, Shanghai and now Dubai rivalled with one another to have the tallest man made structure in their country. Even so, security fears had a severe and depressing effect on architecture, taking their greatest toll on public and government structures, such as embassies, which became even more fortress-like and forbidding than ever.
But inspite of making buildings and structures big and gigantic a new era dawned in the architecture. It was the arrival of green architecture with strong focus on sustainability. World over there have been quite a few R&D efforts going on to develop green building technologies. Frequency with which LEED certified buildings are being announced clearly shows that Green building is just not a fad rather it is the path to survival amongst the growing concerns over sustainability.
Residential buildings in developed countries are profound energy guzzlers. The buzz to retrofit them with green technologies is going to the order of coming decade. COP 15 summit at Copenhagen has thrown more questions that answers. It is time for all of us to wake up from our slumber and do something to make this world a better place to live in.
