How can you make your existing building green?

Green movement has so far focused on commercial buildings alone. Not much consideration has been given to residential houses. Buildings alone accounts for about 40% of the energy consumption in developed world.
Out of this about 55% is accounted by residential buildings and rest by industrial houses. And as regards water consumption the figures suggest that about 12-15% in developed world is consumed by residential buildings. This is the precise reason which makes the subject so pertinent.

There has been absolutely little awareness in making the existing buildings green. Builders and promoters tend to overestimate the cost of making the building green and at the same time underestimating the benefits which may accrue by doing so. A solar thermal water heating system if installed in an existing building by putting it over the roof top can payback the principal within 3 years time period. Builders and realtors tend to overestimate the additional cost of making the building green by almost three times, some where close to 15% whereas the actual additional cost hovers around only 5%. So, what is precisely coming in the way of a “Green Movement”. It is basically the drive and the motivation which has been found to be missing in all concerned with realty.

Whenever you are planning a building just jot down all steps you intend to take for green drive. Any effort from your end even though small which helps in saving our natural resources is more than welcome.
