Energy Audits, Need of Our Times.
Energy today has become a key factor in deciding the product cost at micro level and influencing inflation and the debt burden at the macro level. Energy cost is a significant factor in economic activity. It is an unwritten fact that in our industries lots of energy wastage take place. Whether we are dealing with mechanical systems or electrical systems, need of the hour is to have control over influencing parameters. There is no denying fact that energy saved is energy produced.
The imperatives of an energy shortage situation calls for energy conservation measure, which essentially mean using less energy for the same level of activity. Energy Audit attempts to balance the total energy inputs with its use and serves to identify all the energy streams in the systems and quantifies energy usage’s according to its discrete function. Energy Audit helps in understanding the losses at all the intermediate points. Generally indirect method of loss calculation is adopted as this gives much better picture and understanding of the energy cost. There are many countries who have regulations which govern energy conservation measures in respective societies. But still there are developing countries like India where Energy Audits still remain voluntary. The reason which is put up by authorities are non availability of sufficient manpower, rather energy auditors to handle the workload which may come up after energy audits are made mandatory. But things are expected to change very fast and if failure of CopenHagen summit is any indication then very soon we may see countries like India joining the bandwagon and making Energy Audits mandatory.
