IT has been ruling the roost for quite sometime now. We saw the opportunities galore in IT arena in the decade just gone by. IT has been struggling only recently. Over the years it has grown like no profession has grown in recent memory. India made some strategic decisions and people in the government came to aid by creating the right atmosphere and policies. This lead to India emerging as the IT superpower in last 10-15 years.

India can do the same thing in CleanTech. India with astute policy makers and an economy which has been the fastest growing after China’s, has the necessary wherewithal to grab this opportunity in 21st century. Take the example of US and China, these two countries have earmarked about $102 and $106  Billions for alternate energy respectively in their stimulus packages. In percentage terms China is ahead even with US comparison. EU have also earmarked close to $60 Billions US dollars for CleanTech. Considering energy and transport sector as well, the market potential in CleanTech is close to $6 Trillions.

With such a market size, concern for climate change and unending opportunities, CleanTech is going to be the new buzzing segment in world’s economy which will see tremendous growth. India has the required skills, manpower and technologies to grab substantial share from the green basket. While China has stepped up the gas, India is still not focussed.

Waste management, water-desalination and water treatment are going to see lots of action in coming years as urban infrastructure come under pressure. Energy efficiency is going to be another area which will have growth in coming years. China and India will have to sooner or later move towards cleaner fuel. With UN Climate change summit at Copenhagen only five months away, the world will look forward to more coordinated and concerted efforts from all concerned.
