Web browsers to replace operating systems in future
Operating systems are going to be passe soon. The coming times will see web browsers evolving and becoming more and more feature rich. Windows operating systems who have been virtually ruling the OS market for close to two decades now, will eventually be phased out, opines Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
Microsoft who is close to its Windows 7 final release might have factored in the eventual drying up of Windows market share in coming years. Conceptualization leading to positioning of web browsers against operating systems began about two years back. Amazon has played pivotal role in development of cloud computing. They started reaping benefits of cloud computing in as early as 2005 through web services.
2007 saw Google and IBM along with many American universities latching on to the cloud bandwagon through dedicated research projects. Emergence of clouds and emphasis on cloud computing will slowly but surely phase out operating systems from the market. Clouds can be accessed through web browsers only. That’s the precise reason we have been seeing hectic activities in web browsers segment. Year 2008 which has just gone by saw Apple proclaiming Safari as the fastest browser on the earth. Google came out with Chrome and periodic updates to make it slick and faster. Mozilla’s Firefox is the only browser who has been giving Internet Explorer stiff competition. Though IE is clear leader, but its market share has steadily been dropping over last few years.
Once these browsers evolves and replacing operating systems, the users will be able to access and run applications virtually from any where on the planet where they can get hooked up with Internet.
In coming times operating systems will surely be replaced by web browsers. The sooner Microsoft can read the writing on the wall better it will be. Microsoft IE8 is an improverished browser and can give all leading browsers run for their money. The process of development and refinement will have to continue and whose ever has the sturdiest and faster browser, he will be the winner.
But one thing is sure, the coming times will see a shift away from desktop computing to cloud computing. And in that process operating systems will be phased out.
