Top ten golden rules for ERP deployment
Enterprise Resource Planning brings about major changes in working of an organization. There have been many instances where organizations have benefited from ERP roll outs. ERP brings with them best practices in each of the referred discipline. But failure or success in ERP implementation depends upon preparedness of that very organization. Over the years it has been observed that very few organizations do it successfully the very first time. Analysis of various implementations have also revealed that behind every successful ERP implementation, there is at least one failure.
Based on experience of ERP vendors and their partners, we can list the ten most important factors which make or mar an ERP.
- Senior Management Commitment & Involvement: This is the most important factor which determines the success of an ERP. If the management is not committed and involved, no technology or software will be of any help.
- Readiness of change: Before the implementation of an ERP, organization is expected to harmonize their systems and operations and bring them in to defined templates. In addition change management exercise has to be initiated well in advance to prepare the organization and key personnel to the change which will be going to hit them through ERP.
- Training: ERP implementer and its partner have to select and train the key personnel so that they can appreciate the magnitude of change and be the change agent themselves.
- Quality of people engaged: Quality of people employed with both implementation partner and the organization side itself should be competent and the best. Engaging demotivated personnel from the organization side will not help the cause.
- End user empowerment: Personnel from organization who are working with ERP partners to bring about the change should be empowered to take the necessary decision.
- Defined scope: The initial blue print should have well defined scope and should be prepared with the involvement of all key functionals.
- Sound project management: ERP project should have well defined road-map and milestones. All modern management tools should be employed to implement the project in time bound manner.
- Review and audit : Project review and audit should be conducted at regular intervals to ascertain the veracity of claims and progress checks.
- Requisite infrastructure: Organization should provide necessary infrastructure to the ERP implementation team.
- Strong communication: organization and project team should build a strong communication structure so that both implementation partner and organization are in constant touch at various levels and all issues get resolved in time bound manner.
