Oracle 11g vs SQL Server 2008
Oracle and SQL Server have been at war for many years now. There have been claims and counter claims by respective organzations over various features which the two excellant database management systems offer. Web has loads of data proclaiming superiority of one database management system over the other. Both these giant organizations have come forward with “Comparitive Management Costs Studies” and “White Papers“.
Excerpts from Edison Group which cites many advantages of using Oracle 11g over SQL Server 2008
DBAs can perform typical administrative functions in 41 percent less time when using Oracle Database 11g compared to Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
Oracle Database 11g requires 43 percent fewer steps for the same set of standard RDBMS tasks than Microsoft SQL Server 2008 using Edison’s metric for complexity assessment.
Benefiting from increased DBA productivity due to lower complexity and higher efficiency cited above, businesses could save up to $33,520.47 per year per DBA by using Oracle Database 11g rather than Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
To counter the claims of Edison group here are the excerpts from White Paper brought out by Microsoft.
Summary: Microsoft SQL Server has steadily gained ground on other database systems and now surpasses the competition in terms of performance, scalability, security, developer productivity, business intelligence (BI), and compatibility with the 2007 Microsoft Office System. It achieves this at a considerably lower cost than does Oracle Database 11g.
