Not so young driving Twitter traffic

Twitter has been twittering a lot these days. Last two months have seen steep rise in Twitter traffic. Twitter popularity has grown wordwide.comScore Inc. the global information provider, who has been tracking internet users and their behaviors for quite sometime, has   come out with their traffic analysis of over last one year. The last two months of Jan 2009 and Feb 2009 has seen Twitter traffic getting almost doubled. We at edunetsys feel that March 2009 statistics will be no different.

February 2009 saw Twitter hitting 10 million worldwide users’ milestones. US stats were no different. US users traffic hit 4 million user counts during the same month. There is one interesting observations in the line graph which has been shown here (courtesy comScore). Twitter traffic up to Dec 2008 has been a little Topsy -Turvy but after Dec 2008 it has straightened and lifted northwards quite steeply. So does this phenomenon have something to do with job cuts or recession? One school of thought says that since people are idling they are finding much more time networking with their pals, an observation, which can not be just ignored.

Another interesting observation has been reported by Reuter’s reporter Alexei Oreskovic. In his recent post he has analyzed the demographics of Twitter traffic. It was observed that Twitter traffic is more skewed towards the people who are 25 and older. The segment comprising of persons, who are in between 35 to 54 years, are driving the Twitter. An observation which is not at all palatable in first instance but a close look reveals that Twitter has got itself  integrated with business processes and has become new mode of communication. As a result,  more and more matured and first generation techno savvy people are driving it up.

This also throws an interesting dilemma for young internet start-ups. It was a general perception earlier that to succeed in any internet related business the target audience would always be young college students who are comparatively more tech savvy. But based on these observations, marketing strategies are required to have a re- look now.
