A sub $200 netbook in the offing.
Freescale is expected to launch a chip during this week’s Las Vegas show which is expected to bring down netbooks prices to sub $200 level. ARM chip architecture based 1GHz ARM Cortex A8-based i.MX51 processor is expected to run Linus Operating system. Since the netbooks are primarily used for accessing Internet, Linux with Firefox presents good combo. The definition of netbooks has been evolving over the years. This is evident from the Q3:2008 sales which shows sales of netbooks speeding ahead of iPhones at 5.6 millions. ARM will definitely not be competing with Intel Atom processor as the later one is expected to garner upper segment of netbooks share. However, ARM based netbooks at sub $200 level will be a attractive option for students and as a companion to PCs.
The growth in netbooks have been phenomenal over last two years. The growth projections by market research companies have been mind boggling. While the year 2007 saw sales of 182,000 netbooks, the year 2009 is expected to clock 22 millions and by 2013 netbooks sales are expected touch 60 millions (Statistics courtesy ABI Research, a market research firm).

Some of the market researchers believe that within next12 months, there will be some dramatic change in the mindset of people and more and more people will dump their smart phones and pick up netbooks. The prices of netbooks are expected to even go down below $100 levels for the basic models. ARM chip based processor will be going in for mass production in Q2:2009. Netbooks shall definitely go places in the times to come.
