Microsoft Office and OpenOffice – a comparative study

openoffice1 Microsoft Office and OpenOffice – a comparative study consultingAll modern day offices, corporate houses predominantly use Microsoft Office and there are very few instances of OpenOffice usages in the offices. The reason probably has more to do with the perception. It is generally believed that majority of PC users will be employing MS Office for their work. Therefore issues related with interoperability may crop up if the receiver at the other end is not using easily understandable or more importantly familiar package for creating spreadsheet and word documents. From the perspective of a non IT person, the broad difference between Open office and MS Office can be summarized as:-

Open Office

  • Free

  • Runs on Windows, Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X

  • Features comparable to MS Office

  • Commercial version available as free download

Microsoft Office

  • Costs $179 to $679

  • Runs on Windows and with limited features on Mac OS X.

  • All Open office features plus some more.

With the improvements which have been brought about in OpenOffice 3.0, this software suite has become more closer to MS Office 2007, in features availability. It can now work with variety of formats, Open Document Format(ODF), .docx, .xlsx and .pptx included. But still there are some advanced features in MS Office like Quick parts and a rich collection of templates which you won’t be able to find in OpenOffice 3.0. For example OpenOffice 3.0 can open a .docx file but saving the same in .docx will not be possible. But nevertheless, if you are running your own small business or your staff is not addictive to MS Office features, you can have hundred of dollars on each license of MS Office by employing OpenOffice 3.0. Now you may be eager to throw me a question. Why I am not using it? The reason lies probably with your working environment and the fact that Sun Microsystems hardly puts any money in advertising their products like Microsoft does.

If you are working with a large concern, you may never get exposed to these freebies which are available in abundance. But do try OpenOffice in your PC at home. I am sure you will love it.
