In-flight Wi-Fi internet access on anvil

Plans are afoot by major US airlines to put in place Wi-Fi internet access on their aircrafts. This has been one demand by long distance travellers which has not yet been fulfilled.

Some of the big names in aviation sector in US have just about begun trial operations. Alaska Airlines is one such airline which is employing Row 44 service. In case of Row 44 service, the internet connectivity is provided by satellites and antennas placed on the aircrafts get hooked up to it. This is considered to be a very fast and reliable service and even allows VOIP and cell phone roaming. But none of the Airlines are expected to operate VOIP showing concern for fellow travellers.[ad#ad-468-15]

Aircell’s Gogo service utilizes air-to-ground connectivity to offer internet connections to its subscribers in Continental America.  American Airways has already rolled out internet connectivity on some of its 767-200 planes using Gogo services. Others like Virgin and Delta have plans of introducing them by this year.

Row 44 model which is being tested by Alaska Airlines is expected to be twice as fast as Gogo and airline has plans to get Wi-Fi connected commercially by 2010 (Pretty far ahead).

One notable point which all airlines have to bear in mind is the likely interference of any Wi-Fi system with aircraft’s navigation system. Federal Aviation Administration is expected to give its final clearance only after the trials are complete. But definitely once the services get fully stabilized, the air travellers are going to have wonderful time.
