Projects going haywire are common. There are many factors which can be attributed to delay or overruns. Infrastructure projects are very complex with hundreds of agencies and workers involved in execution of jobs. Today with advancement in technologies and with Enterprise Resource Planning, there shouldn’t be any reason that a project should either overrun the estimates or delivery periods. But we all know that project delays do take place.
Once an organization commits itself to the execution of job at certain agreed price, terms & conditions and delivery, it is assumed that organization had weighed in all factors including jobs in hand, conditions at site, availability of resources etc. But then why do these delays take place?

When we go about executing an order, in majority of situations the execution team knows whether job will be completed in time or it will get delayed. Therefore most important factor which decides whether job will be executed in time or not, is the pre bidding activities and planning which go in to preparing and submitting a project proposal. With a well prepared and though of proposal, chances of project getting delayed are minimal.
In case you have reached a stage where you can see the writing on the wall i.e. project execution delays is imminent, take recourse to following steps to minimize your losses.
- 1. Arrange meeting with owner and if possible reschedule the pending work.
- 2. Optimized buying: Buy in bulk all the items which are required for execution of the pending jobs.
- 3. Reduce idling manpower.
- 4. If you are executing only part of the job and your activity lies on critical path, try to discuss and involve owner of succeeding activities in to your working. This will pre-empt any damages on delays.
- 5. Last but not the least; try to finish off the project with utmost zeal and commitment so that penal charges on delays can be avoided.
Projects are a time bound activity and every activity even other than the ones lying on critical paths is crucial. Please keep in mind that Project Management aids can just offer you helping hand but can not be the executors in themselves.
