Security issues over Google’s “Cloud computing”

Over last week there has been muted reports over Google’s attempt to revive GDrive. We all Google watchers are well aware that company has long been working on “Cloud computing”. Clouds are basically data storage  centers where all data will be stored and processed miles away from the scene of action.  Through this model Google will be able to have all documents & resources under their control.

The ubiquitous desktop then would not require Windows as operating system as all the processing will be done on Google’s servers miles away from the scene of action. The requirement of connecting to the Google servers would possibly be handled by Android, the open source OS for Mobiles developed by Google.  In such an event though the processing will be faster but there would always be need to be online to get access to Google servers or clouds.

But these are small things. And we are sure, Google may be in a position to resolve all technical issues which may crop up sooner or later over Cloud computing. But the most important issues will be related to privacy and security.  Google Privacy Center, declares that “At Google, we’re committed to transparency and choice.” It may so happen that the data, files, user behaviors and preferences  stored at Google’s server may get used and shared by other service providers and advertisers to position and target their products on selected user base.

At VWS, we feel that Google Drive may not get good response, initailly as PC users would not like to part away with their data. Offline working in Google Documents through Google Gears will have to be improved further and all MS Office features will have to find their place in Google Documents.  And of course, security and privacy issue will have to be addressed.
