When I read this piece of information on Google.org, I was a bit perplexed. I pondered about what is Google doing in the energy. Are they diversifying in to this core sector? This coming after recent news on Google buying a paper mill was a shocker for me. But when I dived deep in to the topic, it was then that real news dawned on me. And I was pleasantly surprised. The news had linkage to recent $787 Billion stimulus package approved by American congress.
The stimulus package has substantial amount devoted to energy conservation and thrust on renewable energy. Over 40 million US homes are expected to get smart meters courtesy Obama administration’s thrust on energy conservation. Smart meters have been in vogue for quite some time but what they record is not available to the common consumers. Google through Google PowerMeter has made an attempt to wire their iGoogle Gadget platform with the help of their scalable IT architecture to the smart meters being provided by utilities.
Through Google PowerMeter, the real-time information on energy consumption will be available to consumers. They will be able to know whether their old Fridge is a real power guzzler and needed to be replaced or it still has some residual life. They will also be able to know appliance wise energy consumption. This information might have still been recorded by smart meters provided by utilities but it is definitely not available for common consumers.
Once commercialized, Google PowerMeter web application can definitely go places and be a hit worldwide.
