Firefox leads race to fix Pwn2Own bugs
Pwn2Own contest has really thrown some challenges for Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. While Chrome stood tall at the contest with contestant hackers finding it difficult to find any security loopholes, the others famed browsers failed in arresting the onslaught of hackers. Nils, a German Computer Science student used Sony Laptop running Windows 7 to exploit a previously unknown bug in IE8 and followed it up by exploiting the same bug in Firefox and Safari on Mac.
Mozilla’s Firefox has been the first one to offer security upgrades for its Firefox 3.08. The rules of Pwn2Own do not allow the contestants to divulge the details but Mozilla has stated that all the issues have been investigated and fixed. The details of issues which was also made public by Guido Landi are also there on the Mozilla’s security blog. These fixes have been included in Firefox 3.08 which is due for release on April 1st, 09.

Some believe Microsoft might have already fixed the issue in its last release of IE8. That leaves Safari to come out with their action and fix. The incident somewhere down the line proves that Google’s Chrome is a pretty handy and stable browser. If the EU’s action against bundling of IE with Windows OS gathers steam then browser wars will begin and the market share which presently is heavily in loaded in favour of IE might see drastic turnarounds.
