Do we need GDrive?
After a long time, rumors over Google Drive or GDrive have resurfaced. Earlier when Google had raised its storage and offered paid storage up to 250 GB, the speculations were rife that GDrive will be launched soon. But that was in 2007. Two years down the line, GDrive is still awaited. It was then believed that Google will launch online storage cloud for all your needs and your ubiquitous desktop will be turned in to a thin client. But wait is not yet over.
More than the technology and bulk storage issues, there remain some other issues which probably may need more attention. It’s true that GDrive could kill desktops, as there won’t be any need to have hard drives. There won’t be any requirement of a sturdy OS as Google’s Android, the current OS for mobile devices perhaps would be more than sufficient.
So would that mean death knell for even Microsoft Inc., who relies heavily on Windows OS for its most of the revenues. Many are expecting GDrive would be launched in 2009 itself. If that happens, you can say goodbye to your worries over loss of data. You need not lose sleep over hard disk crashes. You will have your data safely stored in “Cloud” miles away from your actual workstation, on Google’s servers.

But privacy of your documents will remain an issue. Your important documents, images and data may not remain your intellectual property alone. Unless this issue is resolved, there won’t me many takers for Google “Cloud”. But if this issue is resolved, Information Technology will go through a new revolution.
