PowerPoint presentations can be developed through one of the most used Office applications suite of Microsoft. Presentation can be a potent tool of conveying your points to the audience. In eighties good old transparencies were used along with overhead projectors to make presentations. Business presentations used to be fun with presenters slogging long hours preparing for their day. Every single mistake on transparencies used to require rework. Things changed slightly after transparency erasers came on to the scene. Presentations became somewhat manageable. But still preparing graphs and line diagrams required lots of analytical and drawing skills.
Things are different today. PowerPoint Presentations can be made in jiffy. The process of making a PowerPoint Presentations has become almost mechanical with little feeling and mind going in to the presentations. During one of the conferences on communication and presentation skills, presenter shouted that PowerPoint neither has the power nor it will be able to convey my points so I would like to go ahead with my notes and my mind only. But as he went about explaining his topic through notes and making eye contact with the audience, there was a rapt attention. Budding engineers wanted the presentation to go on and on. And at last when it ended, everybody was moved and the man Dr Rastogi got standing ovation.
So the point to emphasize here is that effective presentation should not mandatorily piggyback on PowerPoint to make an impact. PowerPoint Presentations should not be the last word as far as delivering strong presentations are concerned. A few dos that we must keep in mind whenever we are delivering any presentations. These can be bulleted as:
- Don’t write too much in PowerPoint Presentations.
- Space out your points.
- Don’t just read along with your PowerPoint Presentations.
- Let the screen go blank in between the PowerPoint Presentations slides. People need visual break and want to get involved.
- Don’t overload your audience with loads of data.
- Don’t list every possible point relevant in the world. Leave some points for audience to mull and ask for inclusion.
- Don’t have too many PowerPoint Presentations slides.
- Try to trigger discussions along with your PowerPoint Presentations.
- Beginning and how you conclude, are very important.
