Apache or IIS, who is the leader?
Apache web server was leading over Microsoft IIS with a substantial margin till the year 2005. It was then its market share started plummeting. And in the intervening period from 2005 to 2008, Apache from its 70% market share went down to 50%. It was then widely rumored that probably it is the beginning of the end of Apache, who has held its fort right from 1995 as the web server leader.
But the statistics compiled by Netcraft and analysis by OSTATIC has revealed that the downtrend for Apache has been arrested and its market share has started rising again. Apache is popular with PHP and Java languages and since 2002 Apache also provides support to .NET environment. Some may say this may be just an aberration and IIS will course correct and get back to the rising trend quite soon.

But I believe, backed by ever increasing popularity of .NET, IIS will continue to give fight to Apache in the the year 2009 and the gap between the two will get narrower and narrower. As per the January 2009 statistics, Apache market share stands at 52% and IIS at 33%
