“Once upon a time there existed an OpenOffice suite which along with a host of other free products gave MS run for its money”. You may probably soon find this epitaph written all over the place where Sun Microsystems existed. It is sad that an organization which all along its existence fought the commercialization of software, is being acquired.
Sun Microsystems came in to being in 1990 but it never really recovered from “DOTCOM BURST”. Company has given some exciting products and is known name in high end software and runs data centers.
There has been strong association between the two organizations for close to two decades and both have known each other for quite a while. Oracle’s Fusion Middleware, its fastest-growing business, is built on Sun’s Java software and Sun’s Solaris operating system is also a main platform for Oracle’s database business.
Rumors were rife since the day deal between IBM and Sun fell through. There were others suitors for Sun as well. Dell, IBM and CISCO were eying Sun for sometime. Whatsoever happens in future, Oracle will definitely make efforts to commercialize MySQL and OpenOffice. The limited edition of MySQL may also end soon.
Linux community will have to scout for some other options to fulfill their word processing, presentation and spreadsheet needs.
Oracle may not take away Sun’s free offering rightaway but will surely come up with some enterprising options soon. View press release.
