Present India’s story is about high proficiency in Information Technology and lack of proper infrastructure. While metros in India have grown and are trying to match their counterparts in other parts of country, but still there are many sections and areas where even India metros have to catch on. With mobile and internet revolution, even most remote areas in India are well connected. But it is the real infrastructure which is lagging behind in comparison to what we have witnessed in other parts of the world.

China has made huge progress in infrastructure. 2008 Olympics in China has provided them with perfect stimulus to upgrade their many of the facilities. They now have bigger stadiums, grand and spacious airports with state of the art facilities, sound road and rail network, power generation capacities.

India though has been making steady progress but to catch up with its industrial pace of development, the infrastructure has to grow at much faster rate. This scenario presents great opportunities for India’s core engineering professions, Civil and Electrical Engineering. India is facing shortage of experienced and quality manpower in these two disciplines. Engineering is all about specialization. Every engineering profession is unique and specialized. While creating infrastructure like road network, bridges, rail network demand skilled experienced civil engineers, power plants construction require civil, mechanical, electrical and C&I engineers. As engineers move up the hierarchical level with experience, they gain experience in other engineering disciplines as well. At senior positions, engineers from any discipline can take the mantle of heading a project but its the working level where specialization is needed.

India needs skilled specialized core engineering professions in a large number now as the Indian infrastructure takes off. For some of us who are not familiar with what a Civil Engineer, here is the YouTube video. A day in the life – Civil Engineer. Courtesy YouTube. CareerRx.
