Information Technology(IT) vs Energy Technology (ET)
Core professions are back with vengeance. Information Technology remained the most sought after profession for more than two decades. But now its progress has been arrested somewhat. IT purists may not believe in this. But the market statistics emphatically suggests that IT is no longer the choicest profession of young students.
There is perceptible shift from support functions to core engineering professions. The coming decade will see professions aligned with Energy, Water, Infrastructure and Healthcare getting more opportunities compared with support professions like Information technology. Tom Siebel had put up very gloomy picture of IT profession during his speech given to Alliance of Chief executives about six months back. Some may say it may be because Tom is positioning his new venture C3 as an Energy technology company.
His findings may disturb IT guys but definitely it has some logic behind what he is trying to propagate. In US after 2000, the growth of IT has been in single digit. Two decades from 1980 to 2000 saw applications based on only relational databases thrive. But the coming times will see the IT growth coming from Clouds.
It is only the countries like India and China who are driving the IT growth as of now. Acceptance of Cloud Computing will be initially be slow but as the concerns over security of data fizzles out, Clouds will become popular.
But professions related with Energy will definitely be having more avenues to grow and prosper.
