Hot career choices in 2008-09
Citadels are falling. Merrill Lynch, Lehman brothers, AIG all have been icons of America‘s free enterprise. Every body was worried about the sub prime and recession in America’s economy but nobody had expected the fall from grace to be so sudden. The reverberations will be felt throughout the world. Global economies are no more insulated. Any unforeseen and disastrous development in America will have ripples in India and China as well. These American giants have their investments in India’s equity market, financial firms and infrastructure domains.
The real estate will be hit hard. Infrastructure segment like power, roads, rail network may survive the onslaught because of low exposure to foreign funds. But the going will certainly be tough. In such situations, the hot career choices in 2008-09 which will be most favored ones are:-
- Power Engineering, manufacturing and infrastructure management: Power sector will continue to grow many folds. With nuclear option has also been thrown open, there will be no dearth of jobs and opportunities in this sector.
- Medical field: The demand for medical professionals will continue to rise. Of late medical profession as a top career choice has lost its importance. Typically the top brains have moved towards engineering and science streams leaving mediocre students to seek admission in to this field. This field is expected to find favor with common students.
- IT and ITES field: This sector will definitely suffer a dip in its popularity but after some time it will bounce back.
- Soft skills like fashion, acting, journo etc: This shall be another segment which will register good lot of acceptance amongst the masses.
Hot career choices keep changing with the times. Last decade saw finance and accounting as the hot career choice amongst students. But the times to come may see a little bit of sluggishness in this sector.
