Google push in renewable energy
Google Inc is a search behemoth. We all know that. Google has already made investments in renewables. Now taking a leaf from Obama administation’s thrust on renewables in the recent stimulus package, Google has decided to take this forward.
Google has plans to replace coal with renewables and an accelerated roll out of plug in cars. Obama administration’s recent stimulus package has $50 billion lined up for renewable. It’s a welcome move. Like Google, so many other giants will be vying with each other to outsmart others in this segment. Google CEO Mr Eric Schmidt in an recent interview to WSJ has come out with organizations’ plan in renewable sector. Google’s 2030 plan focuses on taking wind energy from current levels of 1%-2% to one third of the energy portfolio by 2030. Solar energy will also be in focus. But it is the general perception that developments in solar photovoltaics have been painfully slow. The costs of solar cells have not come down. While the developments in wind have taken off and presently cost per kw in wind and thermal sector are comparable in US.
But energy can’t have a solution which is limited to the boundaries of US or for that matter any other nation. Energy solution has to be global. It has to involve China and India as well, the growth engines for next decade. If US and EU continue to invest huge amounts in renewable and other developing nations keep burning coal to meet all their energy requirements, then that would not be able to address the issues related to carbon emissions, climate change and global warming.

Earlier we reach consensus and we have Indian and Chinese organizations thinking about Energy conservation and renewables, the world will be a better place to live. We need Google like organizations in India and China to step us the gas.
