Even Americans Think Government Jobs are Better.

A report from USA TODAY suggests something which is quite contrary to modern India’s perceptions. Indians believe that private sector and MNC employees generally earn hefty wages compared to their counterpart in Government Sector. But the statistics presented below proves otherwise. Overall a federal worker on an average earned $67,691 in 2008 for occupations that exist both in government and the private sector. While the average worker in private sector earned on an average $60,046 in 2008.

These salary figures do not include the value of health, pension and other benefits, which averaged $40,785 per federal employee in 2008 vs. $9,882 per private worker, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

On closer scrutiny of data it is gathered that for very specialized jobs in technical areas, private sector pays more than the federal sector.

There can be exceptions but overall it appears that an average federal employee is certainly better paid than a private sector employee.

But as they say in India, if one is talented and possess great skills then probably private sector is the right place. The difference is salaries is quite evident in a few specialized key jobs. But certainly one has to weigh oneself. Government jobs are for an average guy who prioritizes safety and security more than wage cheques.
