Computer Science or the Information Technology profession has retained its Numero Uno positions amongst all other disciplines of engineering for over last three decades. Barring a few die hard fanatics who have their own reasons to go in for some core branches, the top cream all over world has graced computer science departments. This fact continues to amaze me. Though I am one of the graduate in core professions of engineering who passed out from one of the premier Indian Institute of Technology, I have deep respect for all professions.

When you are extremely busy time just flies away. 20 years of my professional life has just whizzed away in front of my eyes and I did not have time to sit back and ponder over what have I been doing over these years. Around three years back I decided to learn computer science as I always had a fascination for computers and software development. I enrolled for three months  .NET course in one of low profile educational institute.  Prior to joining this short term course, I virtually had very little experience in software development.  I passed out from college in 1989 and during our times PCs have just started moving in. We had our programming lessons on mainframes. I had been exposed to programming in PASCAL and FORTRAN.

power plant IT profession is not for the leaders consultingIt was tough time as I had to juggle between my main day job and the evening student life. I had opted for late night course. I was about one month in to the course and was unable to understand even the basics. But I was confident I would be able to do it. Slowly and steadily, I was able to understand some scripts but I knew understanding the concept will take some time. Time just whined away and course got over. I had a certificate of recognition in my hand. It said that Mr. …. has successfully completed a certificate course in DOTNET”.

But I was able to learn what I had intended to when I had planned for this course. I kept on doing scripting work and since I had expert knowledge of systems and organization functions, I was able to understand the business logics and work flow better than the software professions who even had bachelor degrees and more than 10-15 years of experience. Over last three years I have developed many applications in DOTNET with SQL Server 2005/2008 and Oracle 10g DBs. I had even gone to the extent of developing applications in PHP on WAMP and LAMP. I am 42 years old and have started out quite late but I am keeping abreast myself with all the latest development.

I have observed that software development or IT profession tend to make you a kind of introvert. It gives you very little exposure on real engineering issues. Today software development has become kind of cut and past & mix and match type affair. Since all the routine codes are already available in libraries, it becomes more of mix and match type of affair.

I would recommend young minds to also explore other core engineering professions like Civil, Mechanical and Electrical before finalizing the career option.

Of course, this is my personal opinion and would recommend young fellas to get in touch with others as well.
