It was only few days ago when I learnt about free antivirus suite being launched by Microsoft. Frankly speaking I didn’t believe it I thought there must be something else to it. Microsoft already had a product Live OneCare which could not generate any interest amongst avid users.
Microsoft had initially announced their plans to offer antivirus app in as early as Nov 2008. The project was codenamed “Morro”. It was rumored that product will be launched in second half of 2009. Now it is believed that product will be out on 23rd June 2009.
Microsoft is the largest software company on the planet and virtually rules the operating systems and office productivity applications amongst corporate and home users alike. Microsoft has been offering protection suites to help keep computers running its software smoothly. But most of these computers also have antivirus software from either Symantec, McAfee, AVG or Trend Micro etc which keep the Windows operating systems in healthy condition and protects the data.
With the expected launch of free antivirus app from Microsoft all these providers of antivirus apps are feeling jittery. Symantec’s spokesman
has come out and rubbished any possibilities of new launch from Microsoft hitting them hard. But deep inside they are eagerly awaiting Microsoft offering to analyze and review it threadbare enabling them to strategize their plans.
On the other hand McAfee has stated that they are already in competition with some other free antivirus app like AVG and are still able to hold on to their market share. But if offering from Microsoft lives up to its expectations then like their illustrious colleague, McAfee will have to review their products and might have to reinvent themselves.
